These 5 Inspiring Florists Will Boost Your Mood this Mother’s Day

Check out a few things these eight inspiring local florists have done for this very unique Mother’s Day, as well as how the COVID-19 pandemic has renewed their sense of purpose and community.

Debbie Deis is the owner of D & D Floral Design in Los Osos, CA. Debbie considers herself fortunate that her business is located on the same acre as her home, and some of the flowers she’ll be using this Mother’s Day are grown right on her property. She tends to a vegetable garden and during the summer, and customers can purchase her vegetables on the honor system. Debbie also owns 50 hens, so she sells eggs, too! How many flower shops have you walked into where you’ve been able to buy eggs, veggies and beautiful arrangements in one stop?!

Debbie says, “It’s a wonderful life and I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Despite its challenges, COVID-19 has reinvigorated Lovingly Momentmaker, Jeanne Walters, owner of Stargazer Premier Florist in Corvallis, OR.

“This virus has really renewed my purpose and the power of connection that flowers create,” Jeanne says. “Flowers are so emotional and I try to put love and joy into each bouquet, especially now. I have received so many big smiles, waves, and thank you’s after making no-contact deliveries. I sat in the car as a lady received her flowers and as she wiped her tears away, I choked up, too. THIS is why I do my job every day! It’s a way to care for the community I love.”

Cameron’s shop, Cameron Peters Floral Design in Phoenixville, PA, had to temporarily close for a period of time due to COVID-19 restrictions. At the very end of April, Cameron was able to reopen, saying, “I was truly honored to get back to doing what I love today. It really made such a difference in my attitude. Since I was a little scared of going full steam ahead we decided to do tulip day. There was such an outpouring of love and support from our community. It was very humbling to say the least.”

Cameron recently upgraded into Lovingly’s Funnel Bundle, which among other features offers customers the ability to tip the delivery driver and support the florist’s shop by “chipping in” a small contribution to help their local florist stay afloat during the pandemic. Most of her orders since reopening have included a tip and/or support for her business, and Cameron says, “It’s honestly humbling that people are choosing to do it. For the customers that have contributed the highest amount, I tuck a little extra into their arrangement as a thank you. I’m reaching out to all of them with a personal email letting them know that I’m paying some of it forward to the recipient. They have been so appreciative. I believe in good karma!”

Osborne Florist in Winnepeg, Manitoba has deep roots in the community, having been in business since 1972. Owner Oriana Marinelli’s mother and the shop’s former owner, Angelina, were friends.

Oriana says, “I’m born and raised in the area where my shop is located. As a child I would come and play with Angelina’s daughter at the flower shop and we would make boxes, so I have known her my entire life. My dad had passed away and I was extremely distraught, so I purchased the funeral flowers from Angelina. Then my friend gave me the idea to take a florist course, knowing I had always loved flowers. I approached Angelina and the rest is history. I wound up purchasing her shop and building. She has been a constant source of wisdom. She still works at my shop and she’s my mentor.”

When asked for a feel-good COVID-19 customer story, Oriana shared, “I had a customer who wanted to get some flowers to her mom, who was in intensive care at the hospital. By some miracle, all the stars aligned and we were able to get the flowers to her. Her daughter called me later, crying on the phone with me, and said I was the connection between her and her Mom who had since passed away. The hospital’s nursing staff was so happy that her mother knew she wasn’t alone. Phone calls like that fill my heart and that’s when I know that I’m doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.”

Margarete not only owns The Posh Posy in Thunder Bay, Ontario (and maintains Google review average of 4.8 stars!!) but she also runs her boyfriend’s contracting company! She credits her work ethic to her father, who was Mennonite. We love a hard working Momentmaker 🙂
